G6PD-deficiency - Slide 1
In G6PD deficiency, red blood cells are less well protected against oxidative stress due to a deficiency of NADPH. Oxidized hemoglobin can precipitate as Heinz bodies; when these are removed in the spleen, characteristic bite cells are formed. Oxidative damage can also lead to blister cells, which are red blood cells with a blister-like, hemoglobin-deficient zone. Severe oxidative damage can cause intra- and extravascular hemolysis. G6PD deficiency is an X-linked hereditary disorder.
Hemolysis can be triggered by, among other things, fava beans (favism), infections, and oxidative drugs, including primaquine, tafenoquine, dapsone, rasburicase, nitrofurantoin, and methylene blue. Exposure to naphthalene can also cause hemolysis.
This specimen was obtained from a patient with G6PD deficiency after eating fava beans.
