This preparation is from a patient with severe iron deficiency due to gastritis. The erythrocytes are predominantly pale (hypochromic) and small (microcytic). Because the erythrocytes are less well "filled," they are less stable, leading to shape abnormalities such as tear drop cells and fragmentocytes. The red cell indices were as follows;
