AIHA - Slide 1
Image of a patient with autoimmune hemolytic anemia combined with mild cold agglutination. The cold agglutination is noticeable by the clustered position of the erythrocytes. This agglutination was not present when the sample was kept warm immediately after collection until measurement. This patient has a well-functioning bone marrow, so there is considerable production of erythrocytes and precursors in response to anemia. This increased production is reflected in the periphery in the large number of macrocytic and polychromatic erythrocytes with basophilic punctation.
At the time of measurement, the patient's Hb was 2.8 mmol/L and the measured MCV was
128 fL
