Sickle Cells

        Synonyms: Drepanocytes
Sickle cells are seen in sickle cell disease, an inherited disorder in which the hemoglobin variant HbS is incorporated. At low pO2, HbS polymerizes, forming flat erythrocytes with sharp protrusions. Due to their abnormal and rigid shape, these erythrocytes can get stuck in blood vessels, which can cause severe pain and hypoxia in patients.
