Platelet Satellitism
EDTA satellitism is a rare in vitro phenomenon in which platelets stick to neutrophil granulocytes under the influence of EDTA. The complete sequestration of calcium by EDTA can result in membrane changes in the platelet and exposure of so-called 'cryptantigens.' When autoantibodies against these antigens are also present, interaction with the neutrophils occurs. Other than a false-low platelet count, this finding has usually no clinical consequence.
