Neutrophil segment
A segmented granulocyte has 3-4 nuclear lobes connected by thin filaments. The pink cytoplasm contains numerous fine granules, purple-red in color which contain anti-bacterial and protein-degrading substances. These phagocytic leukocytes are the most important defense against bacteria and fungi; therefore, severe neutropenia can lead to life-threatening infections. In healthy adults, approximately 40-80% of the leukocytes in the peripheral blood are segmented neutrophils.
