An abnormal population with increasing FSC arises from a population with very high density . The abnormality seen here is also called the "music note" and is seen mainly in chronic lymphoid malignancies with a very high lymphocyte count (>
50⋅109/L
), sometimes in acute lymphocytic leukemia. The absence of this form does not rule out a malignancy.It is not known exactly why this form arises. Possibly the aberrant cells have a different sensitivity to the reagent in the WNR channel, causing either the nucleus not to increase in size or the cell to swell. Morphologically, this picture correlates with many broken cells in the specimen.
