This erythrocyte population shows a subtle deviation in distribution. There is a slight widening with a "belly" in the scattergram , which may indicate the presence of spherocytes. Spherocytes have a smaller volume and increased hemoglobin concentration per cell leading to increased MCHC. However, the MCV is not necessarily reduced.
Such a pattern can be seen in hereditary spherocytosis, and to a lesser extent, in immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.
